TEACHER EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Teacher Externship Program offers high school teachers working in Perkins-funded school districts the opportunity to collaborate with industries experiencing skill gaps as identified in the recent Regional Blueprint process. The program is sponsored by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and facilitated by local Workforce Development Boards such as ours here in the Metro South-West region.

Optimal externships projects are jointly designed by the educator and participating business partner. The goal is to provide mutual benefit to both while also maximizing teacher exposure to industry so they can, in turn, share their learnings with students. Upon successful completion of the externship, educators will receive a stipend of $7,000.00.

Participants will be required to:

  • Spend a minimum of fifty (50) hours at the worksite, mid-June to mid-August, with a mutually agreed upon schedule. More hours are permissible, as agreed upon by the educator and host site.

  • Plan and log sufficient additional hours to design new, contextualized lessons to be integrated into the course curricula beginning in the 2021-22 school year. Lessons will be reviewed by DESE, and then presented in a forum determined by DESE.

  • Demonstrate the ability to support and encourage career awareness and interest in these industries.
